MAXI Glas and her neighbours are fed up of inconsiderate drivers blocking the entrance to their homes in Marlborough High Street.

Ms Glas and fellow St Peter’s Place residents are often left trapped from driving in and out the archway entrance to their homes, as people are parking on the double yellow lines and ignoring the keep clear sign on the road next to St Peter’s Church.

The one way road has spaces for several cars to park free for an hour on weekdays but business owner Ms Glas says greedy drivers are parking over the lines, oblivious they are blocking residents in.

When she confronts the drivers she is faced with a list of excuses. The main culprits, she says, are shoppers or people going to the dentist or having their nails done at the nail bar along the street.

“The excuses given are endless," she said. “Anything from ‘I have children’, ‘I will be five minutes’, ‘I am late for the dentist’ and ‘I am going for a coffee'.

“In 2011 the traffic flow on the High Street north of St Peter's was turned into a one-way system. Subsequently we have continuous problems with people parking across our driveway, making it impossible to leave our properties or to access our properties.

“Sometimes a car is in the way so you have to go against the one-way system, which no one likes doing, otherwise we can’t leave our homes.

“Normally we walk into the neighbouring shops and ask whose parked there. If we can’t find them, we just have to wait until someone comes back to the car.”

Ms Glas and the residents living in the six townhouses have expressed their frustration to both Marlborough Town Council and Wiltshire Council which has agreed to extend the keep clear road markers and remove parking spaces to try and stop the problem.

However Ms Glas says it is still not deterring drivers and can cause her to miss important appointments, trains connections and flights.

She added: “On Saturday four different ladies blocked the driveway, and these were just the ones I spoke to. The lack of consideration is quite amazing as none of them moved their cars. The double yellow lines and the keep clear sign are obviously not sufficient to stop people from blocking our driveway.

“Usually the traffic wardens stop at the library and don’t come down. I just hope we can have some action taken.”
