THE funeral of wartime code breaker Harry Beckhough will be held at St Mary’s Church in Marlborough on Saturday.

The service will start at 2pm and will be followed by a gathering at the Conservative Club in the High Street.

Mr Beckhough, who lived in Castle Court retirement apartments in River Park, died on March 15 at the age of 101.

He was thought to be the oldest member of the Conservative Party - joining when he was 15.

He was a colonel in the Intelligence Corps and a code breaker at Bletchley Park during the Second World War.

Mr Beckhough moved to Wiltshire in 1996 to be near his daughter, Jennifer, who is married to head of the High Court Family Division Sir James Munby.

Members of the Royal British Legion and the 4th Military Intelligence Battalion will be in attendance.

The Bulford-battalion was officially granted the freedom of the town in June 2011

He celebrated his 101st birthday twice, first on February 8, the day he was born, and on February 15, which is on his birth certificate because his father didn’t register him until a week after his birth.

Alec Light of the Marlborough Royal British Legion said: "We will carry the standard as we do for all ex-service men.

"I have been told by 4MI that they have tracked down some of his comrades which is fantastic so hopefully they will be able to come too."
