THE sixth annual Marlborough Science Fair welcomed more than 2,000 science enthusiasts through its doors on Saturday for an eclectic mix of experiments and shows.

The free fair, held at St John’s in Marlborough, took place between 10am and 2pm as part of the school’s British Science Week.

The SteamPunk Dalek and SteamPunk Droid, brought to the academy by Mark Enright of Wiltshire based podpadstudios which builds models and props for theatre, film and TV, proved extremely popular with visitors of all ages.

Organiser Sally Bere, community director at St John’s, said: “We had over 2,000 people which was really good; doing 10am to 2pm meant we had a really steady flow of people that worked really well.

“I am really really pleased, every year you think it cannot get better but it does. All the hours and hours we have put in were worth it. It’s my biggest event of the year and it’s a real wonderful event to do."

As well as the SteamPunk exhibitions, children were also able to make and release rockets and the Action for River Kennet demonstrated an interactive river model while for the adults there was a talk on climate change from Dr Paul Williams from the University of Reading.

As part of British Science Week, many students from St John’s attended evening lectures in the week leading up to the event.

Their involvement didn’t end there as throughout the day students volunteered to man a stand in the middle of the fair while sixth form students were helping visitors program a robot to tackle an obstacle course.

Mrs Bere said: “It’s very much a public event, aimed at primary age children.

“Most people were giving the event five stars out of five in their feedback; there was very much a consensus of a great family day out.”

The popular Bubble Show covered everything from molecular forces and surface tension to light interference and density and saw bubbles of all shapes and sizes we investigated.

Meanwhile the planetarium hosted shows Zula Patrol: Under the Weather and a full-speed flight through history in Dinosaurs at Dusk.
