NIGHTCLUB boss Andrew Moyles said he has put Azuza in Marlborough on the market because it is time to move on.

But people in the town hope any new owner keeps it going.

It is being offered on a leasehold basis for £120,000 by agent Christie+Co. The lease has 18 years left to run rent passing at £52,000 a year.

The club, the only place in town that stay open until 3am, opened ten years ago and is co-owned by Mr Moyles and Mark Gent. They also have a branch in Bristol and there was one in Hungerford which was last year.

Mr Moyles said: “We always had a ten year plan and it’s really time to move on.

“I’ve recently taken a position as CEO of BB's Coffee & Muffins which has 50 sites across the UK and Ireland so I can’t do both.

“I think the fact that we’ve been there for ten years speaks for itself as to how successful it’s been.

“We don’t really mind what the new owners decide to do with it.

“We’ve found that the format works well but there’s opportunity to do more with the food side.

“There are a lot of places in Marlborough that offer pizza and Italian but I think it could work well as a bistro.

“It’s got a great reputation. What we’ve found, which is something that I didn’t expect, is that the 18 and 19 year-olds who were the clubbers when we first opened are now the 28/29 year-old mums who come during the day with their children, they’ve grown up with us.”

By day the venue is a coffee shop and lounge bar, serving breakfast and lunches, transforming into a sports bar and live music venue by night with the first floor nightclub having a capacity for up to 180 people.

Abigail Wilkes, 25, of Five Stiles Road, said: "I like to come here during the day to meet friends for coffee and a catchup and I come to the club nights here sometimes as well so it would be a shame to see it become another restaurant.

"At the moment there isn't anywhere else like this for young people to go in Marlborough so more people would start to go off to Swindon."

Chris Goodwood, 30, from Pewsey, added: "I think the sports bar would be missed if that went. I'd like it to keep the club nights although I think when the new owners come in it would be a good idea to give upstairs a bit of a revamp."

The venue has played host to a number of big name musicians, in conjunction with Sound Knowledge, including Ed Sheeran, Newton Faulkner and Tim Wheeler.

In 2005 the club started fortnightly disco nights for 12 to 15-year-olds in conjunction with Wiltshire police.

Mr Moyles said: “Bluz n' Zuz gave young people somewhere else to hang out and we were awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Award for that.

“We’ve always had a good relationship with the police, it’s a trouble-free nightclub."
