THE Bedwyn History Society had cause to celebrate when the village pump was officially transferred to the Old School Surgery’s front lawn.
On Friday GP Tim Ballard was presented with a framed picture of Great Bedwyn’s village pump by history society chairman Hoshang Bharucha.
Group treasurer David Harris said: “Because the yard has been sold and a house is being built there, the history society was keen to find the pump a new home and this was the obviously place for it.”
The reconstructed pump was previously at the former Lloyd’s Stone Masons Yard and the group has been looking into its original location.
Theories included that it stood in front of the village hall before the First World War, that it had always been in Lloyd’s Yard or that there were two village pumps.
Dr Tim Ballard said: “Whichever theory you believe, we are pleased to give a home to a piece of village history that in its day provided fresh well water, which we now take for granted when we turn on our taps.”
