A DISUSED telephone box in Manton has been given new life now that it has been transformed into a miniature village library.

Until recently the box had no use but villagers Robin Notton, a former mayor of Marlborough, and retired engineer Keith Phillips turned it into a book exchange where people can swap an unwanted book for one that takes their fancy.

Mr Phillips, of the High Street, said: “I went down to a village south of Devizes and I saw a box there that had been filled with books and thought it was a good idea to do the same with the one here.

“It didn’t take a lot of work at all. We took out the old money shelf and then just put about five new shelves on the walls.”

The new library is proving to be a big hit in the village. Mr Phillips said: “It’s gone very well, it’s almost full to the brim.

“When I walk through the village I ask people what they think of it and everyone has said they think it’s a great idea.

“It’s got a lot of children’s books in there so a lot of children are using it too. My two grandsons have been to take a book out.

“There is a lady who lives next to it who goes in and makes sure it’s all kept in order.”
