People can have their say on the future of Avebury during a consultation on a new World Heritage Site (WHS) management plan.

There has always been a World Heritage Site management plan for Avebury but this is the first time the area has been included with Stonehenge.

Beth Thomas, Stonehenge World Heritage Site co-ordinator, said: “It shouldn’t mean too much change to the management of Avebury.

“Stonehenge and Avebury are actually one World Heritage Site so it makes sense for them to be under one management plan.

“A lot of the issues for Stonehenge and Avebury are similar, such as farming and the economy, but the difference with Avebury is that a lot of people live in the middle of the site so the way it’s managed has more relevance to them.”

Much of the land in Avebury is owned by the National Trust and it has worked with English Heritage, which has guardianship of the monuments, to produce the plan.

The plan provides a long- term strategy to protect the sites for future generations.

People are being invited to comment on the plan.

The WHS team will be at Avebury Social Centre on January 15, Marlborough Library January 28 and Devizes Library on January 29. The consultation draft can be found at http://consult.wiltshire.gov.uk/portal.

Completed response forms can also be emailed to stonehengeandaveburywhs@wiltshire.gov.uk or sent to The WHS Co-ordination Unit, Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre, Cocklebury Road, Chippenham, SN15 3QN. Comments must be received by noon on March 2, 2015.
