Ash frontman Tim Wheeler wowed an intimate audience with an acoustic set in Marlborough.

Wheeler is the co-founding member of Ash, the Belfast pop-punk outfit, and was at Sound Knowledge on Monday evening promoting his first solo album Lost Domain.

The album deals with the death of Wheeler's father, who had dementia, and its affect on his family.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Alzheimer's Society, a charity Wheeler has worked closely with since his father’s death.

The Ivor Novello award-winning songwriter played a half-hour set at the next door Azuza café with tracks from his new album as well as some Ash classics, ending with Girl from Mars.

Sound Knowledge owner Roger Mortimer said: “The audience listened intently and respectfully while Tim played songs from his excellent new album about his father and then the mood was lifted for the last couple of songs when he played Ash tracks.

“It is quite an introspective album and was probably quite cathartic for him to write.

“One of the songs, Vigil, about his father’s passing was really moving. You could have heard a pin drop.

“He said that it’s a strange thing to be out promoting because it’s not toe-tapping music.”

More than 100 Ash fans turned up to Sound Knowledge and after the performance Tim signed copies of the album.

Mr Mortimer said: “It was a really great evening we got a good turnout for a wet and dark November evening.

"He’s a really charming guy and he stayed to sign things for everyone who wanted something signed.”

On the new album he plays all of the instruments apart from guest appearances from the likes of ex-Razorlight drummer Andy Burrows and members of Alberta Cross and Neon Indian.

On Thursday Ray Cooper, formerly of the Oyster Band, will be making an appearance at the independent record store from 7pm.
