A KNITTED matron is making her way around Marlborough to help raise funds for Prospect Hospice’s Savernake Appeal.

Matron is the mascot of the Friends of Savernake Hospital and was knitted by one of their volunteers for their hospital shop.

To help the campaign reach its £75,000 target, matron has been hiding in locations such as Ducklings Toy Shop, Savernake Hospital Shop, Quality Stationers and on the My Apple Juice stall at Marlborough community market for residents to find, take a picture and post it on the Friends' Facebook page.

The first person to get a picture onto the page triggers a £10 donation from the Friends into the kitty for the appeal and then Matron moves on to another hiding place.

Last Friday she was found among the chinaware display in Mercer’s Cafe in Hilliers Yard by the owner’s 86-year-old mother-in-law Joan Mercer.

Mrs Mercer is well acquainted with the nursing profession, having been a sister at Marlborough Children’s Hospital in the 1950s.

Café owner Hayley Mercer gave 10 per cent of the proceeds from the sale of her chinaware to the appeal.
