Staff at Clarke and Rodway Garage in Marlborough are contemplating a future in a new site but their customers remain their priority.

The garage is still operating from Granham Hill but if planning permission is granted for developer McCarthy & Stone to build 27 retirement flats on the site, the business will move to a new site.

Nick Clarke, who took over management of the garage 12 years ago, said there are number of possible locations the business could move to and a final decision has yet to be made, but he is keen to stay as close to Marlborough as possible.

He said: “Obviously this is all subject to planning permission and we will find out about that in November, but it is looking promising this time.

“Where we go all depends on where we find that is a suitable size, but we also have a lot of customers in Swindon so that would be the next area we would look at moving to.”

If the move does go ahead Mr Clarke anticipates the business would be in its new premises in the early part of next year.

The family-run business, which started in Great Bedwyn in 1964 and moved to its existing site in 1979, operates a free collection and delivery service to most of its customers.

This option, said Mr Clarke, would still be available to anyone who did not want to travel to the garage in its new location.

Mr Clarke said: “Over the years we’ve built up a loyal clientele and they remain our priority.

“A lot of the staff live on the other side of Marlborough so if we were to move to Swindon they would spend their mornings picking up customers’ cars and bringing them over to the garage.

“At the moment I live in Swindon and I bring cars from there over to Marlborough.”
