Racehorse welfare charity Greatwood celebrated its 21st anniversary this weekend at its annual open day.

On Sunday the charity, based at Rainscombe Hill Farm at Clench Common, near Marlborough, opened its gates to hundreds of members of the public and raised just under £7,000.

Throughout the day there were parades in the main arena, including one by top trainer Nicky Henderson with the 2013 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Bob’s Worth and up-and-coming mare Carnival Flag.

Mr Henderson brought the Cheltenham cup with him and visitors were able to have a photograph with it and Bob’s Worth after the parade.

There was also a parade of seven current and former Greatwood horses led by Deano’s Beano, who was previously ridden by AP McCoy.

Celia Jones, organiser of the open day, said: “The parade always goes down well because the commentary gives a detailed story of where the horses came from, how they came to Greatwood and their race history.”

Horse lovers were treated to demonstrations from eventing star Lizzie Brown with her thoroughbred Princeton and Olivants Equine Events Mane Attraction, who gave a traditional Spanish dressage display.

Away from the horses, families also enjoyed a Tractor Ted digger den and a bouncy slide and dog show.

Ms Jones said: “It went very well and we had lovely weather.

“People said that it was a very friendly, family atmosphere and everyone seemed happy.

“It was quite nice and relaxed with lots of things going on to suit everybody. We were really pleased with how it went, we had quite a lot of support from local businesses.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported us and those that came along on the day.”

As well as rescuing, caring for and rehabilitating former racehorses, the charity encourages relationship-building between disadvantaged young people and those with special educational needs through a series of educational programmes.
