3:54pm

Police have arrested three men on suspicion of robbery following a theft at a jewellery store in Marlborough High Street.

It is not clear how many men initially burst into Deacon’s at 9.45am but they started smashing display cases and grabbing jewellery and cash. It is not thought they were armed at the time.

They then sped off in a Citroen Picasso which was later found abandoned and on fire. The men then commandeered a black Seat and were later spotted travelling at excessive speed on the A419.

Close to the slip road at Commonhead, they crashed with a Royal Mail lorry and another car before three men made off on foot.

One was arrested almost immediately while two others ran off into woods close to the Great Western Hospital, being pursued by dog units, an armed response team and the police helicopter.

A short time later they were both arrested. Some of the items from Deacons were recovered at the scene. It is not yet clear whether this was all of the stolen items or money.

Police have thanked all the people who have contacted them but are still appealing for information.

1:08pm

Hannah Warren, who works at clothes shop Fat Face opposite Deacons, said: "We saw three lads run into the shop and they started smashing it up so we were on the phone to the cops straight away.

"About 40 seconds later a fourth went in. They were all in balaclavas or hats and bandanas.

"Fi saw the driver in the car and got the registration and gave it to the police.

"I don't know what they used to smash the place up, it looked like baseball bats or hammers.
"There was no one in the shop so I was stood at the door waiting for customers so I saw everything.

"They saw that we'd clocked them so they left, it all happened so quickly, it was surreal.

Colleague Fiona Hall added: "Because of where this shop is we could see everything.
"We locked up the shop and went over to help."

Linda Pope, from the Gallery also in the High Street, said: "I didn't see anything of the robbery I just saw the car.

"I think there were four men but I couldn't be sure and they were shouting go or something. I heard the shouting and I thought 'people don't shout in Marlborough'. "

12:30pm

The suspects have been apprehended - although police would not confirm how many arrests were made.

"Everybody has been very helpful and we really appreciate it.

"It's thanks to their help that the robbers, or at least some of the robbers were caught.

"Unfortunately it is one of the risks of the trade.

"The matter is in the hands of the local police now and they are dealing with it very rapidly."

Perhaps they should've chosen a getaway driver with a driving license, might have helped, sounds like an episode of Police Squad.

No doubt the serious criminals involved will end up with at least 18 hour community service from our resident local judge.

Which they then won't bother doing because they know they'll have at least 4 'last' chances before any notion of seeing the inside of a cell might start to trouble them.
