Have your say on Malmesbury road changes

Malmesbury residents are being consulted over plans to spend thousands of pounds on road safety improvements.

Planning permission is currently being sought to improve conditions in Newnton Grove, including more parking spaces and safety signs.

The key proposals in the application include four new parking spaces, fenced-off gardens, five garages for residents without parking and bollards to prevent people parking on grassed areas.

Town and Wiltshire councillor Simon Killane said: “We have been working on this for many months now.

“There has been a lot of support for it.

“It’s taken a long time to get to this point.

“Residents were very concerned about people parking on the grass, particularly outside where there are families with young children.

“There were also real concerns about the bend and people driving too fast around there.”

The application has been submitted by Greensquare housing association, in liaison with Wiltshire Council.

It will be funded out of money used as part of the Section 106 planning gain that developers contributed after building on the old open air swimming pool.

The application is currently going through the consultation stages and local residents are encouraged to air their views.

Information can be accessed at http://simonkillane.mycouncillor.org.uk/ where you will find a link to Wiltshire Council’s website where comments can be left on the proposals.

Remove the stupid S bend and straighten so it curves and meets the bottom of the hill with parking spaces around the side nearest the Newton grove houses. Put in a new junction for the bottom of White Lion park and convert all the new space from the old road into parking spaces. This would also remove the road away from the park where the kids play to make it safer.

These issues were all raised years ago in objections to the planning application for the new houses in that area. What a pity all these aspects weren't considered when the development was being planned as perhaps much, if not all, of this extra expenditure could have been avoided .
