PLASTIC ducks flew off the shelves at the Somerfords and District show over the weekend as thousands of people flocked to Great Somerford for the annual show.

The sell out charity duck race was one of the show’s highlights while show jumpers strutted their stuff in the affiliated and unaffiliated competitions at the great Somerford showground on Saturday (August 12).

“We had a fantastic turnout,” show chairman Russell Brooks said. “The equestrian event was very well supported and I was speaking to people who had come from places like Hampshire and Berkshire just for the jumping.

“We actually sold out of the ducks this year and they all got released in the River Avon which runs on one side of the showground.

“The money raised will be split between Julia’s House and the Roy Castle Lung foundation once everything has been checked and balanced and the committee have had a meeting but we usually donate around £1,000.”

The format of the show, which is now in its 122nd year, has hardly changed over the years but the various activities from dog shows to horticultural and industrial shows always draw a crowd.

“It is just a lovely community event and we are so lucky to have such a dedicated committee of local people who give up their time to make sure it is a fantastic event,” Mr Brooks added.
