THE main stage of WOMAD festival spurred into action last night as dozens of Malmesbury schoolchildren joined a folk artist on stage for the annual opening event.

Hundreds of proud parents swarmed the crowd last night to watch their children from Malmesbury School, Lea and Garsdon, Minety and Brinkworth Earl Danby launch the world festival alongside folk quintet Sheenlanagig with a stunning performance of the arts.

"My ten year-old twins Pippa and Charles from Malmesbury Primary also loved being part of the dancing," mum Jo Hibbard said. "Sheelanagig were brilliant, taking the time to be with them as were the teachers from all the schools.

"Charles said to me at about 9pm: 'Mum do you know what? WOMAD has made my dream come true. I want to do it all again!"

Diana Bristow, who watched her 11-year-old daughter Emily perform, added: "My daughter loved being part of the choir! It is such a unique and wonderful opportunity for local children."
