MEMBERS of the Malmesbury League of Friends have paid tribute to their outgoing chairman after he announced his retirement after more than 50 years with the organisation.

Robin Clark announced his retirement at the annual general meeting last Wednesday after dedicating 20 years to the organisation, which provides funding to local people with specific medical needs.

“Over that time, there have been many changes both in Malmesbury and to the League," Mr Clark said. "When I took over as chairman, our funds were modest and we had a hospital which always needed our help.

"So we were constantly fund raising. Recent generous legacies have strengthened our financial position and enabled us to make some substantial donations to both charitable organisations and individuals.”

The former chairman, who will have his name immortalised on a plaque for a garden bench, will be replaced by David Hide, who has been a trustee for five years. Alison Lewis was elected as vice chairman, Wendy Harris elected as secretary and David Rutherford reelected as treasurer.

Speaking about his appointment Mr Hide said: “I am greatly honoured to be elected as chairman in succession to Robin Clark, to whom MLOF owes so much. Although we no longer have our own hospital, there are still considerable demands on our funds, including the Malmesbury Primary Care Centre, Athelstan House, locally based charities and needy individuals.”
