THE contents of an ATM cash point was stolen over the bank holiday weekend after the Waitrose in Malmesbury was raided.

Three vehicles were spotted in the car park just after midnight on Monday (April 17) where seven people were seen smashing the large double glazed window at the front of the store.

A long metal chain was put over the ATM inside the store before being pulled out of its concrete base by one of the vehicles, causing a second pane of glass to smash. The thieves then left the car park after 20 minutes in a convoy with a large amount of cash.

Speaking yesterday, branch manager John Judkins said: "There was a burglary last night where they used vehicles to remove the ATM. Wiltshire Police were very prompt - they were on the scene in a matter of minutes.

"It has been a very good service from them and forensics who have been down this morning doing what they do."

Wiltshire Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen a Volkswagen Gold, Isuzu Trooper and a Citroen Panel van leaving the car park and travelling on the A429 just after midnight.

Detective Sergeant Catherine Kirkham said: “A dog unit attended the scene when we received the report and carried out a search of the building but there was no trace of any offenders. The scene was cordoned off to allow CSI officers to carry out a thorough investigation.

“Extensive damage has been caused to the windows of the store, as well as the interior.

“We believe the three vehicles were a Volkswagen Golf, Isuzu Trooper and a Citroen panel van and they left in convoy, turning left out of the car park and travelling north on the A429.

“We are carrying out a detailed investigation into this incident and would like to hear from anyone who may have seen these three vehicles arriving or leaving the Waitrose store around midnight, or anyone who may have information which could help us identify those responsible.”

Waitrose will be opening as normal but anyone with information should call Wiltshire Police on 101 and quote reference 54170033415.
