DOG owners in Wiltshire have been left delighted after scooping up a number of awards at Crufts which took place last weekend.

Chippenham’s Claire Prangle took two of her four Irish Setters, three-year-old Glory and eight-month-old Dollar, to the competition and came back with a first and fourth.

Dollar claimed victory in the Minor Puppy class while Glory finished fourth in the Post Graduate category.

The 49-year-old said: “They did really well, my young one had a first which was really great and my other one had a fourth-place in a very large class.

“It was a great day, it was just a good day all round, there were so many people from all over the world and it was great.”

Janet Phillips, who owns 17-month-old Darcy with Kate and Gerald Condron, took first-place in the Good Citizen Dog Scheme category.

“I have shown dogs for 25 years and had lots of success but never won at Crufts so it was a thrill,” said the 78-year-old who lives in Chippenham.

An Affenpinscher breeder in Calne struck it three times lucky when her dogs Marilyn, Flame and Valerie placed in their respective categories.

Suzanne Pirrie, who has been breeding and showing dogs since the late 1990s, said she was delighted to take home four rosettes.

“Marilyn won Postgraduate Bitch and Reserve CC, Flame won Junior Bitch and Valerie won Limit Bitch,” she said.

“My daughter wanted a puppy when she was younger and we ended up getting an Affenpinscher and since then we have just fallen in love with the breed.

“I was up at 2.30am on the day to get there and it is such a time consuming hobby but an enjoyable one.”

Judy Thompson from Minety also struck gold when her Bedlington Terrier Jack won first-place for Limit Dog.

Mrs Thompson, who used to breed Dobermans before moving onto Bedlington Terriers said she was chuffed with Jack's performance.

“I have been quite lucky with my dogs in the past but my main goal is their temperament. You can produce show winning dogs but you need them to be sociable,” she said.

“Jack has won three times at Crufts and I also get as much pleasure from my other dogs who win, but I hope to go a bit further with Jack in the future.”
