KEEN to support older people living with dementia in Malmesbury and the surrounding area, the Friends of Riverside have undertaken specialist training that will make visitors feel comfortable at their senior drop in events.

The trustees at the Riverside Community Centre, based on Gloucester Road, have undertaken the Dementia Friends initiative and created a programme of events for senior citizens in the hopes of boosting their social interactions.

Chair of the Friends of Riverside Kim Power said: "At Riverside Community Centre, we want to ensure there are activities and social events for all ages to take part in and enjoy. So we are really keen that older members of our community have a programme of social events, where they can meet up, enjoy refreshments and a light lunch and if they so wish, take part in some activities free of charge.

"Unfortunately many older people with dementia give up on social events and even just going out and about because it is so difficult for them to do so. This may be because some people don't really know how to respond to people with dementia and sometimes places and buildings can be difficult to negotiate mentally and physically."

The Riverside Community Centre, which has been classified as dementia friendly, also has friendly trained staff that will act as familiar faces at the drop in sessions.

Pam Ollis from the Alzheimers Society added: "It is great that places like the Riverside Centre are taking positive steps to become dementia friendly.”

The first three Friends of Riverside seniors drop in events will take place from 10.30am-1.30pm on March 18, April 15 and May 13.
