MALMESBURY'S summer spectacle is set to come to an end as the town makes its final preparations for the carnival's biggest event.

This year's procession, which will take place from 6-8pm on Saturday, will see hundreds of people take the streets to watch themed floats make the journey from Park Road, through the Market Cross, along Cross Hayes, up the High Street and back to Park Road, collecting money for local good causes.

Numerous dancers and musicians will also take to the streets in what is regarded as the highlight of the Malmesbury Carnival, which has been running events since the beginning of August.

Deborah Clogg, chairman of the carnival committee said: "The invention of procession entrants never ceases to amaze, whether they use floats, bicycles or their own two feet! Last year, for example, there were Pearly Kings and Queens, human Thunderbirds ‘puppets’, film star impersonators, and the historic Witches of Malmesbury, among many others."

In previous years, thousands of pounds have been tossed into buckets and nets along the route, making it the carnival's biggest fundraiser.

Although entries are now closed, those who will be involved will be judged in three categories; motorised vehicles, walkers, cyclists and hand-propelled entries and individual walkers, cyclists, hand-propelled entries, wheelchairs and mobility vehicles, with the top three places awarded up to £100.

Two trophies will also be awarded to the best overall entry and the best pub entry while the Paul Dove Cup will go to the most outstanding entry in spirit of the carnival.

Residents are asked to remember that the town centre will be closed to traffic for the duration of the procession, starting at 5pm and ending at 8.30pm with diversions in place.

Although Danter's Fun Fair, which will house rides for young and old, will be set up in Station Road long stay car park. Alternative car parking can be found at the top of Whychurch Hill near the Whychurch roundabout.
