A STREET artist from Malmesbury has reached another creative landmark as iconic Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis took home one of his murals.

Luke Hollingworth, who works under the alias Syd from his shed in Gastons Road, created a 10ft mural of the farmer with a distinctive Bowie stripe to display in his trade tent at this year’s festival.

Syd said: “It is off the scale! He took home the big 10ft one. It was plugged on all the official Glastonbury channels and it got quite a bit of coverage. Michael Eavis was due to come down and see me on the final day but he couldn’t make it in the end as he is a very busy man. My manager called him instead and he asked if he could have it for his private collection. It was fantastic and he saved me having to take it home!

“He apparently has a barn where he keeps lots of memorabilia from Glastonbury and I am hoping I will hear from him and if I don’t I will write to him. I want to get a place there to paint next year as it will be nice to do something for the festival.”

The street artist, who regularly attends Glastonbury, said he decided to paint Eavis as the 80-year-old always has a smile on his face and the Bowie splash across his left eye paid tribute to an artist who helped create the festival.

“It is off the scale and it made all the mud at this year’s Glastonbury worth it,” Syd said. “I have sold about 20 of the smaller designs since the festival finished but there are still a few available from the shop.”

Since his return from Glastonbury, the spray paint artist has been hard at work creating a panda mural on the fencing around Boondocks Festival after the organisers called for volunteers to help set up.

Syd said: “I managed to get a few old signs together and fix them to a fence and I had a lot of black and white paint left over. I feel like that’s quite a challenge sometimes because if you have a limited amount of resources, you have to be really creative.”
