EIGHT year-old Chloe Horton and her family have been left stunned and amazed after a petition the youngster launched calling for urgent road improvements following a fatal accident reached the 500 signature mark.

Chloe’s campaign for safety measures at the road near her home in Crudwell has also won the support of North Wiltshire MP James Gray while Wiltshire Council has now promised to review the issue.

Her mother Sarah Horton, 44, said: “Between on-line signatures and the number of people who have signed the paper petition at the village shop we have now just about passed the 500 mark.

“To reach this amount of support, along with the council writing to us saying they have put the matter on their review plans for 2015/16 is an amazing achievement for a young girl. Chloe is stunned, and so are we.

“The road is such a serious concern but it looks like something is now going to be done about it – and the sooner the better because there are always likely to be accidents there, including one last week.”

Former soldier Anthony Jeng, 38, died when his blue Audi A3 collided with a white transit van and an HGV on the A429 near Crudwell and the Kemble Business Park in October last year.

Like many Crudwell residents Chloe was deeply touched by the tragedy while her four year-old sister Evie (correct) was best friends the three year-old daughter of Mr Jeng.

Chloe, who was seven at the time, made a chance remark to her parents while they were driving along the road about how safety improvements could be made on dangerous roads.

Mrs Horton said: “She said ‘what can we do about it mummy.’ I told her that people drew up petitions. A few hours later she came into the lounge and said ‘mummy, here’s my petition.’”

After her parents helped with a few alterations they sent it to Wiltshire Council calling for a review on road signage along with the possible provision of crash barriers on a stretch of road “where a number of accidents have occurred in recent years.”

When the petition went live in April Chloe said she did it to stop other people getting hurt on the road and added: “It’s because my sister’s friend’s dad died on the A429.”

The ultimate aim was to reach 500 signatures which has now been achieved following a boost from numerous former Royal Engineer colleagues of Mrs Jeng’s who signed the on-line version.

Comments from local supporters on the petition site include: “The road is unsafe and something needs to be done to rectify this….the road is incredibly dangerous and the amount of accidents I have seen on that road is more than should happening…I want this road to become safer for everyone.”
