FIREFIGHTERS will be out and about in Malmesbury’s town centre this Saturday to encourage people to join the on-call fire crew.

The crew will be in the town centre with the fire engine between 10am and 2pm.

Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service needs more people to provide fire cover for Malmesbury and the surrounding communities, particularly day cover.

Watch manager Chris Harvey said: “The team at Malmesbury is really committed to helping the community.

“On-call firefighters receive the same training and development as whole-time colleagues and we can be called to all sorts of emergencies including fires, road traffic collisions, animal rescues and flooding.

“It is fantastically rewarding to be a part of the community and to be in a position to help people.”

On-call firefighters respond to a pager when a 999 call is made locally and cover is needed at all times.

They usually make themselves available for between 48 and 120 hours per week. Between them, each fire station team will provide cover for weekdays, evenings, nights and weekends.

In order to be on-call, you will need to be able to respond to the fire station in around five minutes once your pager goes off.

If you are interested in being a firefighter in Malmesbury and can’t get into town on Saturday, you can call into drill night at the fire station in Gloucester Road any Monday evening between 7pm and 9pm or visit www.wiltsfire.gov.uk/workingforus
