MALMESBURY’S renowned Abbey Gardens opens for Mother’s Day this Sunday (March 15) as part of the National Gardens Scheme.

However, this is likely to be the last year that the public has the chance to stroll around the sumptuous, nature-rich gardens as the property is up for sale.

The historic 14-bedroom Tudor mansion, whose five acre gardens boast a waterfall, a river, a stone circle, a monk’s grave, wildflower gardens and a “hedgerow head”, is on the market for £3.5 million.

No-one has yet bought the property but there continues to be interest from potential buyers.

Ian Pollard – famously known as The Naked Gardener – anticipated that the gardens would later open as usual for the 2015 season.

NGS spokesperson Tricia Duncan said it could be the last time that Abbey House Gardens took part in their national open gardens scheme.

She said: “The owners have been very generous. As the property is up for sale we obviously don’t know whether it will be part of the scheme anymore.”

Abbey House Gardens will open from 11am-5.30pm this Sunday. Admission is £8, children free. Further information: 01666 827650 or www.abbeyhousegardens.co.uk.
