Kind Ruby Hodgkinson has had her head shaved for charity, in support of her little sister, who lost hers after chemotherapy.

Eleven-year-old Ruby, of Goatacre, has raised more than £2,400 for children’s cancer charity Clic Sargent, which has been supporting her family since sister Isobel was diagnosed with cancer in November.

Isobel, nine, had a series of chemotherapy sessions in the run-up to Christmas and was devastated to lose her hair on Christmas Day.

Ruby – who attends Hilmarton Primary School with her sister and younger brother, Ted, five – did not want her sibling to be alone in wearing a hat.

So she visited High Street Barbers in Calne on January 2 for a drastic chop to show her support.

Their grandmother, Patricia Edwards, said: “It was a shock, because I really thought she would just have it cut short, but she went the whole hog. It was a surprise, but she’s quite proud of it.

“Isobel is wonderful, she had beautiful long, down to her waist, hair; that’s the cruellest thing for her.

“She’s quite the star; she goes through each treatment just as a matter of course. She never complains.

“People have been so generous; donations have been unbelievable.”

Clic Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families.

It helped the Hodgkinsons by providing somewhere to stay while Isobel was having treatment in Oxford.

Father Ceri said: “Ruby’s just been amazing; all three of them have. It’s not often they are apart. We are a typical family, always together.

“The fundraising has just been massive. Even anonymous people, who we don’t know. It keeps getting bigger and bigger.”
