More than half-a-century after first getting to grips with a woggle, Scout leader Mike Goodyer has quit the organisation that transformed his life.

The retired science technician of Sheldon School in Chippenham has given 30 years of service to the Scout Association.

A leader at the 1st Crudwell Scout Troop, he received a rousing send-off at a surprise presentation when parents, former and current leaders, committee members and Scouts filled the village hall.

“The Scout movement has had a huge effect on my life – and still does,” said Mr Goodyer.

Growing up in the Nottingham area, he joined the Cubs when he was eight before progressing to the sea and Air Scouts.

While representing Nottinghamshire at an outward bound course in the Lake District he came to acquire skills and a love for trekking, mountain climbing and other outdoor pursuits.

“That changed my life. I have been going climbing, skiing and doing these sort of things ever since.”

Mr Goodyer became a Cub and then Scout leader during his 20s. He then had a break from the organisation before moving to Crudwell 20 years ago and becoming involved again when his son Robert joined the village Scouts.

Since then he has become an active leader but, at 60, felt it was time to step down because skiing, climbing and similar escapades were on the horizon.

“Scouting is a big commitment of your time – you can’t be here one week and away the next,” he said.

Mr Goodyer was presented with a photo album covering events and activities over his Scouting career.

He said: “Scouting has moved with the times over the years but it still adheres to the principles of Baden Powell.

“While embracing computer skills and the internet, and featuring activities such as wind-surfing and paragliding we still have campfires, make twists with flour and water, go hiking and play silly games. It’s very much about team-work and working together.”

*Beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers are all thriving in Crudwell and there are vacancies for both boys and girls. An exciting programme is planned in 2015 that includes plenty of outdoor activities.
