Parents and staff at Sutton Benger School are celebrating an “outstanding” report that heralded its “inspirational leadership” after a visit by inspectors earlier this month.

The school won top marks in a report by a team from the Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools (SIAMS).

Its “distinctiveness and effectiveness” as a Church of England school was demonstrated through “an ethos where children are valued as individuals and whose talents are given every opportunity to flourish.” Inspectors said the 139-pupil primary school, through its distinctive Christian character, was outstanding at meeting the needs of all learners.

The report stated: “Its positive ethos, with a strong emphasis on inclusion, ensures each child feels valued and special. Children enjoy coming to school and this is reflected in the excellent attendance.”

Inspectors said the strength of the school’s Christian values made a positive impact on the children’s academic, personal and social development.

The team praised the “inspirational leadership” of the headteacher, together with that of the head of religious education, in developing the school’s distinctive character.

The report further said: “The school shows strong awareness of providing extra support for vulnerable children with careful and accurate tracking of their progress.

“Children have a strong voice in school through the School Council which enables them to feel highly valued as members of the school community.”

It was deemed outstanding in all four area on which it was inspected: meeting the needs of learners; the impact of collective worship; the effectiveness of religious education; and the effectiveness of the leadership and the school as a church school.

Headteacher Hayley Roberts said: “We are thrilled with this report as it recognises a community has been created where Christian values are not only expressed, but are ‘lived out’ and are at the very heart of the school.”

She was especially keen to recognise “the leadership and involvement” of Kate Baldwin, who for many years has been the school’s RE/SMSC (spiritual, moral, social, cultural).

Chairman of governors Elaine Cowan said: “We are so proud of our pupils for always upholding and living out the values underpinning learning at Sutton Benger School.

“Our vision is to provide a creative curriculum and inspiring learning environment which encourages every child to reach their full potential.”
