One of three mock signs hung above empty shop fronts in Malmesbury has disappeared following a fierce debate.

The signs, which parody logos of failed high street chains Blockbuster, HMV and Comet, appeared earlier this month above premises in Oxford Street.

A row broke out on social networking sites about the signs and development in the town.

The signs, which read ‘BLOCKBUST’, ‘hmv’ and ‘Vomit’, were branded “offensive” by Coun Simon Killane.

Artist Luke Hollingsworth, who created the signs, said: “Simon posted his dislike of the signs, especially the ‘Vomit’ one, and it triggered a huge debate.

“We have a lovely little high street but sadly the odd shop closes and remains closed. We have one or two things like the new pizza restaurant, but another business closed for that to open.

“The idea was for a bit of fun. I was making a point about getting the centre of the town sorted before thinking of expansion.”

Mysteriously, the ‘Vomit’ sign has disappeared, however Mr Hollingsworth believes it may have been taken by a fan.

Coun Killane said: “One was removed, the ‘Vomit’ sign, which was the most offensive. I don’t know who it was. The others I’m not as concerned with.”
