Inquiry as bus runs into a Devizes home
8:00am Saturday 4th August 2012 in Devizes
Police were called after a bus collided with a house near a veterinary surgery in Devizes.
The bus mounted the pavement in Estcourt Street and hit number seven, which adjoins Estcourt House Vets. The vets practice rent out the property as a home.
The bus damaged the wooden porch on the property and fire fighters from Devizes dismantled it because it was unsafe.
The driver of the double decker Stagecoach bus had left his details with the occupiers of the property he hit but left the scene to travel back to Swindon.
The police arrived after the fire fighters.
A police spokesman said: “We stopped the bus near the Beckhampton roundabout and the driver was given a breathalyser test, which proved negative.
“As no complaints or allegations had been made, he was allowed to continue on his journey.
“We have been in touch with the bus company.
“Minor damage was caused to the property and to the front nearside of the bus.”
Ed Davies, a vet at Estcourt House, was called to attend the incident and believes the bus was performing a u-turn on the mini roundabout outside the vets practice when it struck the porch.
He was surprised at the collision as the property is set back from the road, but said Stagecoach had agreed to pay for the damage.
It is understood the bus was out of service during the incident at 8pm on July 20.
Stagecoach did not respond to a request for a comment.
