5:00pm Thursday 2nd February 2012 in Devizes By Lewis Cowen
Urchfont residents Simon and Jenny Holt will be rattling pots and pans for a good cause when they set up a “pop-up” restaurant in their own home this month.
The couple have been inspired by the growth of the ad lib eateries, which are growing increasingly popular, to set up their own and raise money for the charity Diabetes UK.
Mrs Holt, a business consultant and former president of Devizes Chamber of Commerce, said: “Simon and I took part in the Guest Who’s Coming To Dinner? event at Devizes Food and Drink Festival last year and we were really impressed by the idea of having dinner with people you’ve never met before in someone’s home.
“We chose Diabetes UK as our charity because the disease is a growing problem in Britain and the charity needs as much support as possible.”
Groups of up to eight people will be catered for in the attractive conservatory dining room of the Holts’ Edwardian home in the centre of Urchfont, though they will need to bring their own wine.
Their restaurant will be open for a limited season only.
Mrs Holt’s interest in cooking recipes from around the world and the couple’s fondness for eating at a wide range of restaurants, both in Britain and abroad, are also inspirations for their venture.
Typical menus might start with caramelised onion and anchovy tart before moving on to stuffed chicken breast wrapped in pancetta and finishing off with brown sugar meringues with a berry compote.
