AN 18-year-old from Devizes is helping to pave the way for the world’s first disabled-led national youth orchestra.

Ben Bryan, who plays the trombone, is inviting audiences to experience a cutting-edge concert with the South-West Open Youth Orchestra with musicians, both disabled and able-bodied performing, on Monday evening at 7pm at St Georges, Bristol.

This is the last time they will be playing as the award-winning South West Open Youth Orchestra, and the regional success of this trailblazing orchestra will now be built upon nationally with the launch of the National Open Youth Orchestra in autumn this year.

It will be the world’s first disabled-led youth orchestra and will also be open to non-disabled young people, providing an innovative and ambitious musical context for everyone.

Musical director Doug Bott, said: “Thanks to Ben’s musicianship, we are now able to build a flagship orchestra for the UK. But the National Open Youth Orchestra’s first performance won’t be until 2020, so this is your chance to get a glimpse into a visionary orchestra, a modern orchestra for the 21st century where diversity is the catalyst for creating exciting new music.”

The performance on Monday will also celebrate the transformation of St George's into a fully accessible venue.
