THE Winding Road of Faith, written by Reverend Francis Chadwick, is a tale of two halves.

What started out as a biography of his life turned into an examination of the history of Christianity, through his life stories and countless hours of research on religion. He was inspired to take on the challenge after having a quadruple heart bypass in 2010 and deciding to write about religion.

A biographical part one traces his life story and 60 years as a priest, living and working in Uganda, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Dar-es-Salaam, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kenya and Namibia. In the second part he examines the history of Christianity from a modern world view.

Mr Chadwick, 87, of Wickfield, Devizes, said: “I have tried to tackle all the problems in today’s modern world. Every time we turn on the TV there is more news of stabbings in London and so many other issues.

“I think people need faith as much today as they have in the past, and even more. People have their up and downs and struggles through life and when you can use simple language and plenty of examples, you can make faith accessible.”

The Reverend has even learnt more about his own faith during the writing process as he delved deeper into the history of religion and science, morality, God in today's society and Jesus’ vision for humanity.

Having moved to Devizes in 2003, he has shared the writing experience with fellow Devizes Writers Group members.

He continued: “We read each other’s work and tear it to pieces. I have another book that is written which I will think about after this one is out. There is a great deal of excitement around this book at the moment which I am enjoying.”

The book is available online and from good book shops. He will be signing copies from Devizes Book Shop in May and will be at St.James' Church this Sunday, April 8, between 10.15-11am.
