SNOW on Sunday meant many locals decided to stay at home rather than take part in an open day staged by a wargames group but an American enthusiast battled to be there.

Enthusiasts from Devizes and District Wargames Group turned out for the event in the scout hall in Southbroom Road but only three visitors braved the weather.

Club chairman Philip Mackie said: "Over 20 members managed to come and stage some attractive display games however our hope to attract potential new members was thwarted by the snow.

"Apologies flooded in by email, text and phone call during the morning from people who didn’t wish to travel. Although quite by chance our American visitor from last year was back in the UK so came along once again."

Snow didn’t stop play but the event went ahead with fewer games than planned. Five tabletop wargames were played covering the Dark Ages to Word War II through to a Star Wars X-Wing fighter game.

Mr Mackie said that anyone who wanted to find out more about the club but were put off by the weather would be welcome at the regular meetings on Sunday afternoons at the scout hall.

The club was established in the 1970s and has met weekly ever since to play tabletop wargames using scale figures and models, board games, role playing and card games. The annual show, Attack! is held each July and attracts around 1000 visitors to Devizes. This year it will be held over the weekend of July 21 and 22 at Devizes School.
