POLICE say a 95-year-old man injured in a road accident outside Sainsburys in Devizes yesterday afternoon is recovering in the Royal United Hospital, Bath.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance after the accident at about 3pm on Tuesday after being struck by a blue Peugeot car driven by a 61-year-old woman. Neither she or her passenger was injured.

The A361 was closed for five hours leading to massive traffic problems throughout the Devizes area and surrounding villages.

A police spokesman said: "We would like to thank motorists for their patience last night while we dealt with the incident.

“We know that there were traffic problems in and around the centre of Devizes because of the road closure, which was put in place to allow paramedics to treat the patient and for officers to conduct a full investigation.”

Tri force officers who are investigating the accident are appealing for witnesses and say at this stage they do not know how the man came to be involved in the collision.

PC George Rabczak said: "The road was closed for five hours for an examination of the road to be carried out."

Police are still also appealing for witnesses to an accident that happened just before 8.30am yesterday morning outside the gates of Dauntsey's School when a bus from the Red company based in Salisbury struck a 10-year-old girl.

She was airlifted to Bristol Children's Hospital and underwent surgery on an ankle but she is expected to make a full recovery.
