YOUNGSTERS from a village school did their bit to help needy families over the festive period of Christmas and New Year.

The children at Chirton Primary organised a reverse advent calendar that introduced a novel way of donating food.

A spokesman for the school said: "The children had the opportunity of picking a number then buying an item for the Foodbank and then bringing in on the day that they had picked.

"The children were delighted to be able to help others."

At the end of term all of the items were given to Liz Starling project manager of Devizes Foodbank. She said: "We were delighted to receive all the lovely goodies that the children had put into the calendar."

The Foodbank, which is now based at Devizes Community Hospital, received including food donations from Wiltshire police staff and cash from organisers of the Devizes Food and Drink Festival.
