TWO teenage boys and their teacher braved the shave in front of hundreds of pupils to raise money for a cause close to all their hearts.

Isaac Wright, 13, Jacob Stevenson, 13 and teacher David McKay who is head of year nine at Lavington School, near Devizes, all lost their locks to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Youngsters in the year group chose the charity to support after a pupil lost her father to cancer. Mr McKay said: "The idea came from the year nine from representatives.

"We then had an assembly to explain the idea and the boys came forward as volunteers to join me."

The three set pupils a target of raising £500 before the shave could go-ahead. Mr McKay said: "We are not quite bald as we had a number two cut but it is very, very short and you can see my scalp.

"This is the shortest I can ever remember having my hair and it feels very chilly. I think I will be wearing a selection of hats in weeks to come. We managed to reach our £500 target and by the time of the shave had raised £512."

He said the boys had been given special dispensation by head Sarah Lowkis to have the short style which would normally be in breach of school rules.

He said: "Hopefully it will have grown out quite a bit by the time we return in January."

He was also worried about what his wife Sarah would make of the new style but said she was supportive as it was for such a good cause.

Both they boys looked quite different after their cuts which were carried out by staff from Mikey's Barber Shop in Devizes. Before the shave Isaac had a long fringe while Jake had a spikey style.

Pupils from year nine were joined by those from years seven and eight for the shave which took place in the school's main hall last Tuesday.

The Macmillan Brave The Shave campaign has seen people of all ages going under the razor to raise money for the charity which supports people who have been diagnosed with the disease and their families.
