POLICE in Devizes are warning would-be criminals to watch their step this Christmas as they crack down on shoplifting and purse-dipping.

The Wiltshire East Community Policing Team is working with local businesses on a Christmas operation designed to ensure the festive shopping period passes without complaint.

Sergeant Scott Barrett said Operation Eskimo, which launches tomorrow, would involve a mix of uniformed and plain-clothed officers and staff carrying out extra patrols in the town centre until the new year.

He said: “We want to make sure both businesses and shoppers can enjoy the festive season without being fearful of petty criminals who are out to ruin their fun.

“Our local intelligence tells us that there is usually an increase in shoplifting and purse-dipping offences at this time of year and this has a negative impact on everyone working and shopping in the town.

“We want to reassure people that we are not going to tolerate these types of crimes and will be actively working to reduce the number of incidents and quickly react, arrest and hopefully convict those who commit crimes.”

Community co-ordinator Teresa Herbert added: “We also want to remind people to follow our crime-prevention tips so they are doing everything possible to reduce the likelihood of being targeted by thieves.

“The run-up to Christmas always means the town centre gets very busy, both during the day and in the evening, and being extra observant and cautious can help keep you safe.”
