ARTISTIC youngsters at a Devizes primary school have had designs taken to the top of the world and also turned into a lasting mosaic.

Children at Nursteed Primary created three panels for the mosaic to reflect the countryside close to the school, the heritage of the town and classroom work.

They were also inspired to be creative by art student Ben Chalmers who was taking part in a charity trek to Everest Base Camp.

Pupils designed letters within pictures to spell out Nursteed on a flag and Mr Chalmers then took it with him up the mountain.

Deputy head Penny Stanley said: "We wanted the mosaic to reflect our school and decided on three panels to represent the rural, the town and what happens in school.

"All children in the school created the mosaic, from the youngest maybe putting in just a few tiles in the canal or fields sections, whilst many of the key stage two children were responsible for whole sections."

Artist Joanna Dewfall worked with the children and funding came from the friends of the school.

Mrs Stanley said: "It was an impressive way for the children to return to school with all children pointing and saying 'that's my bit'."

Mr Chalmers, who is a friend of Mrs Stanley, came into school last term to explain to pupils about his trek and fundraising for Children with Cancer.

He held class workshops and set a challenge to see how much children could raise and also asked them to design letters for the flag.

Mrs Stanley said: "The children were very engaged in the project and chose to have a non-uniform day wearing red to support the charity colours.

"Winning designs were then painted onto flags by the children in a further workshop with Ben. He took the flag on his trek and photographed it there and then came back last week to present an assembly to the children with photographs of his challenge, the returned flag and prayer flags and rocks for the school.

"The children were very enthused to see him. He was very good at helping them to realise that if they have a goal they can go for it which is a great message to start the year."
