A TEAM of determined cyclists will ride from Big Ben to the Eiffel Tower to raise money for a Devizes based charity.

The group includes Dawn Whiting who is the co-ordinator of Splash and Youth Action Wiltshire which is the youth arm of Community First.

Money raised from the cycle which starts on Friday (15) will go to help Splash which provides activities during school holidays for children aged from nine to 16 who are facing a challenge in life.

Mrs Whiting said: "Activities are delivered across the county with free minibus pick-ups also provided.

"The Splash programme gives young people the opportunity to experience new, challenging, positive activities in a safe environment. Splash activities are designed to increase participants’ self-esteem, self-confidence, communication skills and social skills which also aids the development of new positive friendships, new interests and new skills. During the recent summer holidays Splash delivered 34 activities, accommodating 397 free places for young people."

The 160 mile cycle, which should be completed by lunchtime on Sunday (17) has been organised by New Era Fitness studios in Melksham under the leadership of personal trainer DJ Hussey. In addition to Mrs Whiting and Mr Hussey the team of ten is made up of Judith and Amy Greenman, George Penny, Richard Hayes, Michael Smith, Ben and Rachel Bradshaw, and Sam Gooding. The support crew comprises Mrs Whiting's husband, Steve and Alison Hale.

Mr Hussey said: "This is the first big international challenge that we have held this year. It has taken a lot of effort but everything is booked and organised. We are known as the Mighty Titans and will be cycling at least a 100km a day during the trip.

"All funds raised will go towards the Splash October and December school holiday activity programmes enabling Splash to deliver activities for young people who are facing a wide range of challenges.

“Some have special educational needs or disabilities, or are on child protection plans, in care, at risk of anti-social behaviour, or are young carers, or victims of crime/bullying, or from families facing bereavement, breakdown, substance misuse or financial hardship."

The group has a target of £1,600.
