PEOPLE in Devizes will get the chance to have their say on how Wiltshire Council should spend and save money at a meeting on September 26.

The meeting at 5.30pm in the Corn Exchange will look at how the council can balance its books at a time when it is faced with making cuts and putting up prices for services such as car parking.

Council bosses want town and parish councils to take over some services and for community groups to take on others. Plans to put up car parking charges have just been released by the council and show average increases of around 12 per cent.

A council spokesman said: "The council currently spends around £900m each year on more than 300 services and has recently agreed a plan to deliver an ambitious programme of work over the next 10 years.

"The council’s vision is to create strong communities, prioritising growing the economy, protecting those who are most vulnerable, and working with partners in an innovative and effective way.

"Changing demographics and the continuing reduction in funding from central government mean we have to continue to find substantial savings and work even more closely with local communities to encourage and support them to do more for themselves."

Members of the council's cabinet will attend the meeting to discuss potential cuts and increases and to listen to people's views on how the cash should be managed.
