YOUNG gardeners were out in force despite the wet weather on Sunday as the community garden in Potterne continued to take shape.

Cameras from BBS's Gardeners World were once again on the plot in the village near Devizes to get the latest update on its community garden which has a regular slot on the programme.

Youth worker Steve Dewar, who entered the project into a competition to be named as the show's project as part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, is delighted with the way it is taking shape.

The land on the Ryeleaze estate had been tended in the past but had become overgrown. But now it is flourishing once more with the help of volunteers of all ages.

Mr Dewar said: "I never expected to make it through the competition and to win. I met with BBC presenter Ali Vowles to discuss the project and we were told we’d been successful.

“The space is quite big and went pretty much unnoticed at the moment. We’ve tried to do things with it in the past but have struggled to recruit volunteers to help. This time the Five Lanes Primary School is involved as well as the Royal British Legion and other local groups such as the gardening club."

“This is a great opportunity to get involved in doing something for the village, and something that hopefully young people can use now and in the future.”

Presenters Joe Swift and Ali Vowles are taking a keen interest in how the project is progressing and their are also regular updates on BBC Points West.
