YOUNGSTERS from a village football team will be on target next season thanks to a £1,000 grant that has paid for a new set of training goals.

Worton & Cheverell Football Club, near Devizes, was given the cash by the Premier League and Football Association Facilities Fund which provide money for grassroots soccer.

Club chairman Neil Black said the money would be used to buy replacement training goalposts. He said: "The new goals will allow training to be undertaken with mobile goals that will reflect match size goals. Additionally the goalposts are of metal construction and more robust than previous goals.

“By being able to access the grant we are able to stretch the limited funds that the club has and maintain ability to deliver financially viable access to football in a safe environment and support enabling more players to take part in developing their football skills and participate in this healthy outdoor activity.”

Paul Thorogood, chief executive of the Football Foundation, said: “I am delighted that a grant from the Premier League & The FA Facilities Fund has enabled Worton & Cheverell Football Club to develop their training facilities for the benefit of all their teams .

"This development will provide a real boost to football in the local area.

"Since 2000, the Football Foundation has supported grassroots projects worth more than £1.4bn, investing into areas where the need is greatest and where it will have the biggest impact in terms of getting more people playing football and a wide range of other sports.

“With this funding, provided by the Premier League, The FA and the Government, through Sport England, we are helping to improve community sports facilities across the country and thereby the playing experience of those who take part.”
