PEOPLE living in Victoria Road, Devizes, will be able to get parking permits after Wiltshire Council agreed a new scheme for the road.

Earlier this year the town council backed plans for part of the road closest to Devizes Hospital to become a residents' parking zone after many years of debate on the need for the permits.

Now Wiltshire Council has agreed the scheme should go-ahead with an amendment which excludes the area outside St Mary's Alms House.

The plan for Victoria Road sparked debate about having a similar scheme for people living in nearby Commercial Road.

A report to Tuesday's town council meeting said Commercial Road would continue to be monitored with a view to introducing parking permits if the need was proven.

People living in Victoria Road had complained to both town and Wiltshire Council for many years about the need for permits as they often found it impossible to park outside their own homes.

Among those who led the battle for the residents' scheme was David Fruen. He was delighted in March when the town council backed the project.
