Wings Over Stonehenge, Devizes festival walk.

It was hard to believe that the rolling meadow land over which the Devizes Arts Festival walkers were taken by Roger Green,

of the Wings Over Stonehenge group, were once a very noisy, muddy and busy airfield. This was the site of a 1917 - 1921 training school.

Now divided by the A303 the Day Camp taught aircrew how to fly and navigate,, while the Night Camp concentrated on night bombing with the 100ft wingspan Handley Page 0\400 aircraft.

Today's landscape was contrasted with that of 100 years ago, as depicted in a wonderful collection of WW1 photographs showing rows of tented accommodation and temporary hangers. The walkers heard many interesting facts and anecdotes as they covered the three miles from Larkhill, around the Cursus and tumuli to the edge of 303 and back pasted the visitors to stonehenge itself.
