AN impromptu rehearsal at the home of Sweet guitarist Andy Scott just hours before his band took to the stage at Concert At The Kings with some old friends on Saturday meant they were ready to rock.

Guitarist Jamie Moses, who played with Queen and Tom Jones, along with Slade drummer Don Powell got the audience singing along and jigging to the music as they played old rock favourites such as Mony Mony.

Mr Scott, who lives just yards away from the field at the back of King's Arms in All Cannings, got the party going with Sweet favourites such as Wig Wam Bam before the band were joined by first Moses and then Powell.

Rain fell for much of the afternoon and evening but compared with last year's storm and torrential downpours was nothing and the mood remained upbeat.

Early performers such as John Coghlan's Quo and Gerry and the Pacemakers kept people entertained with songs from the 60s and 70s.

Many people in the crowd said they had come to see Wilko Johnson best known for his days with Dr Feelgood and Ian Dury's band The Blockheads.

It seemed right that the man, who in 2013 was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given only month to live, was appearing at Rock Against Cancer.

He said after his energetic performance on stage: "The only time I really feel happy is when I am performing. Most of the time I am really grumpy.

"I am very pleased to be here supporting Rock Against Cancer. It is better than being dead."

Alison Moyet, who in the 1980s was part of the band Yazoo, cuts a very different figure these days as gone are her trademark caftans to be replaced by figure hugging clothes that show off her now slim body.

But even though her figure has changed her voice remained as distinctive as ever. She said after her performance: "I had such a lovely time. Thank you to all the brilliant people for making us so welcome."

Ending the night was the All Star Band made up of musicians who have appeared with some of the biggest names in music.

Organisers John 'Grubby' Callis and pub landlord Richard Baulu will not announce how much has been raised for cancer charities and local good causes for several weeks but they are hoping this year's event will have raised more than £40,000 and take the overall total for all six concerts to £200,00.

They thanked everyone for attending and helping to make it a success.
