TWO teachers crossed the finish line together when they took part in the Bath Half Marathon on Sunday to raise money for charity.

PE teacher Sophie White, 33, and Year 1 class teacher Sophie Hansford, who both work at St Margaret's Preparatory School, Calne, completed the 13.1 mile course in 2 hours 15 minutes.

Mrs White raised £700 for Wiltshire Sight, which is the school's charity of the year, and Mrs Hansford raised £1,300 for the Starmer-Smith Fund set up by TV commentator Nigel Starmer-Smith.

Others taking part in the Bath Half included Team Dotty from Dorothy House Hospice Care. Among its numbers was Liam Tollington, 24, whose mother Barbara from Bromham, near Devizes died of cancer in 2003. She was treated by the hospice's care at home service and died surrounded by her family.

Mr Tollington, who now lives in Bristol, was joined by friends Anton and Nina Gospodinov and the trio have raised £800 between them.

But Mr Tollington was not content with just running a half marathon he went on to complete a 100 miles cycle ride on the same day accompanied by his sister Hannah, 27, who was raising money for Cancer Research and Mind.

A total of 180 Dorothy House supporters took part in the half marathon and the hospice is on track to beat last year's fundraising total of £54,000.

In the past Mr Tollington has raised more than £500 for Dorothy House in memory of his mother by running the York Marathon in 2014 while he was studying Economics at York University and another £500 doing last year's Bath half.

He said : “Dorothy House was a lifeline for my family when my Mum was ill and I enjoy taking on fitness challenges to raise money for the Hospice. Knowing that I’m doing something to help people like my Mum get the best care, keeps me motivated to battle through tough training sessions in the rain.”
