WILTSHIRE cricketer Luke De Souza has been released on bail after appearing before magistrates on Monday charged following an incident outside Sainsbury's in Devizes on Sunday lunchtime in which a man sustained a stab wound to his leg.

De Souza, 24, appeared in court in Swindon charged with possession of a bladed article in a public place and grievous bodily harm without intent. He was remanded on bail to appear before Swindon Crown Court on March 10.

He gave his address to the court as Heathcote, Warwick, Warwickshire but until recently had been living in the Devizes area.

On Sunday police and ambulance crews were called to Monday Market Street at about 12.30pm after a 35-year-old man from Devizes was found with a leg wound.

Police at the time said his injury was not life threatening and his family had been made aware.

Acting Detective Sergeant, Michelle Hilton praised officers who gave the injured man first aid at the scene and to members of the public who came forward to help him and assist officers.

Staff from Sainsbury's were also quickly on the scene to add their assistance.

Supermarket staff called the emergency services after cries were heard outside the store.

Passersby, staff and shoppers went to a man's aid just before and police taped off the area as a South Western Ambulance Service crew arrived.

The Wiltshire Air Ambulance rapid response car was on the scene moments later.

De Souza has been a leading batsman for Potterne Cricket Club and also played for Wiltshire. He made his debut for Wiltshire against Cornwall in April, 2015.

In 2013 he was part of the team that helped Potterne secure a fairy tale promotion into the second tier of the West of England Premier League by taking the Glos/Wilts Division crown.

Last summer he played three times for Wiltshire and in 2015 he was part of the team on eight occasions.
