TWO men who want to open a micro brewery near Devizes hope they will be on target with Gunslinger Ales.

Glen Upward of Rotherstone, Devizes, wants to create the brewery of craft ales at Coate Lodge Farm in Coate and has applied for a change of use for the building.

He will be going into business with Aistis Nefas and they want to create beer with a twist in flavour. An the application to Wiltshire Council said: "The business will brew small scale beer, sourcing ingredients, products, and services from the local area wherever possible.

"Gunslinger Ales will rejuvenate an old dairy building that has remained unused for some ten years. Over time the building will be renovated sympathetically, and in keeping with the environment it is in.

"The business will operate during a typical working week, with visitors to the site being minimal and mainly by request. The brewery will mainly operate within the confines of the building."

It is not expected that the company will sell direct to consumers. Mr Upward said: "It is my vision to eventually use grain from the farm in the beer, and give spent grain and yeast back to the farm to feed the cows and pigs. I would also like to use meat from the butchers when hosting guests."

Brewing will occur several times during the week, and for about one hour each time there will be a smell of wort and hops boiling.

He said: "The capacity of the brewery does mean that the volume will be small, and is unlikely to reach the nearest property. The only noise produced would be from moving casks or from visiting vehicles."
