YOUNGSTERS at Devizes School found out what it would be like to be confined to a wheelchair and raised money for charity by spending a day unable to walk or run.

PE teacher Heather Lane organised the day to raise money for Get Kids Going which helps disabled children get involved in sport.

She said: "The idea behind this initiative was to raise awareness of the challenges a wheelchair user would face on a daily basis. Our year 7 students were really engaged and thoughtful towards this and have learnt a great deal from their time in the wheelchairs.

"The students involved have also raised money to go towards Get Kids Going. We aim to raise £3,000 which will provide one child with a wheelchair."

Mrs Lane is also going the extra mile herself by running the London Marathon for the cause. She thanked Ben Humphrey from Swindon Shock Basketball Club for loaning the wheelchairs for the day.

On Monday the pupils did all their lessons in the wheelchairs and went to assembly in them. During the lunch break they played wheelchair basketball in the sports hall.

Representatives from each tutor group took part in the fundraiser and will be sponsored by family, friends and other students. Last term youngsters raised money for the same charity by holding a throw a wet sponge at a teacher event.
