FORMER Devizes Mayor Paula Winchcombe fears a serious accident will happen unless Wiltshire Council takes action to replace missing No Entry signs.

Mrs Winchcombe, whose family runs Charles S Winchcombe and Son funeral directors in New Park Street, is worried that signs in nearby Couch Lane have been removed after being damaged and others are no longer readable.

The one way street which leads to Devizes Wharf should only be accessible from New Park Street but signs at Commercial Road end of the road were hit by vehicles and later removed by Wiltshire Council.

Other painted signs on the road itself are so worn they can no longer be read.

Mrs Winchcombe said: "People are driving down the narrow road in the road direction. I am very worried a serious accident is going to happen. The road markings for No Entry are barely visible and there have been many near misses as motorists continue through the restricted part."

She has reported the problem to Wiltshire Council via Devizes Town Council.

A spokesman for Wiltshire Council said: "We are aware of the situation and are working to rectify the issue. We will also be repainting the road markings early in the new year.”
